In our Covid-19 world of closed borders and job uncertainties I observe, with interest, how people are living – and spending – differently.

Some of my friends and family have limited discretionary funds due to job losses, reduced hours, or anticipation of either of those scenarios.

A large chunk of the people I know, however, actually have job security and money to spend as they’re not going to be holidaying overseas anywhere soon (as would be their norm).

So, as I observe, I note people titivating their homes, embarking on renovation plans, travelling domestically, and/or buying luxury items. Chances are you may be doing one of those four things, or more than one.

While Westgate Lifestyle isn’t the home for the likes of luxury vehicles, there are big ticket items aplenty. Perhaps they are things you wouldn’t normally purchase but they hold plenty of appeal (go on then), or they’re items you’ve long had a hankering for.

That could apply to a chandelier to add some glam, a robotic vacuum cleaner to add some fun (I’ve come across a few robotic lawnmowers of late), a hide rug, a leather chair, a gaming computer, an excellent sound system… the options are many and wonderful.

I’ve added a coffee machine to my selected items pictured here too, as a nod to a conversation I had recently with friends around “what did you go and buy as soon as you heard we would be in lockdown for weeks”.

One friend said the thought of six weeks without decent coffee was untenable, so it was a coffee machine purchase for her. Another said it was the impetus to set up a home gym, so exercise equipment was purchased. Yet another said top of the list was stocking up on bubbles.

The latter may be just the person who now decides it’s time to do her bubbles justice and purchase a designated wine fridge.

The motivation and inspiration differ, but I am sure we all have a dream big item that we can conjure up, just like that.

And, yes, it’s OK to have more than one thing on the list!

And, of course, in our Covid-19 world it’s an especially good time to help our local retailers if we are in a position to do so. They’re noticing that it’s the big-ticket items that are getting some love right now. Happy shopping.
